about

This piece is written from Ruth Bader Ginsberg's perspective to her mother, Cecelia, who passed just before Ginsberg graduated high school. In a time when women had to struggle to be recognized in the slightest, her mother worked endlessly to support and nurture Ruth in and outside the classroom. What i'm imagining in this song is how Ruth feels about her childhood and the career path made possible, in large parts, by her mom's efforts. This quote of hers from the NYT just after she was confirmed sums it up well.

"I pray that I may be all that she would have been had she lived in an age when women could aspire and achieve and daughters are cherished as much as sons."

lyrics

wish you had seen me through james madison high / i've done well and i've done it for you each time / you fought hard but the cancer was strong / and it took your life / each day i spend on the bench / feels like i sit with you / no way your brother was smarter than you / but you took a factory job to put him through school / i often wonder what you could have done / had you lived when daughters were loved as (much as) sons / each day i spend on the bench / one of the chosen few / second woman in history / and i'm here with you / wish you had seen me through james madison high

about

While rooted in folk, the soundscapes in which Nashville artist/producer Josh Fuson tells his stories vary from intimate vocals over an acoustic guitar to lush arrangements of soaring keys, weaving electric guitars, and anchoring drums and bass.
